A cyclone packing winds up to 285 km per hour forced iron ore miners on northwest Australia’s Cockatoo Island to evacuate but posed little concern for larger mining operations out of the storm’s path.
HWE Mining Pty Ltd, which mines about about 300,000 tonnes of iron ore annually in partnership with U.S.-based Cliffs Natural Resources, has moved 36 of its Cockatoo Island workers to a safety shelter, it said in a statement on Wednesday.
