Patriot Coal Temporarily Suspends Operations at Federal Mine

Patriot Coal Corporation today reported that it has temporarily suspended active mining operations at the Federal No. 2 mine near Fairview, West Virginia. Mining operations ceased after one measurement in an abandoned area of the mine was found to be out of compliance during routine testing in accordance with the mine’s ventilation plan. As a result, the Company is making further refinements to its ventilation plan to address these conditions. The Company intends to review these refinements with the U.S. Department of Labor, Mine Safety & Health Administration as soon as possible in order to resume production at the mine.
Brazilian mining company, Vale Group is conducting a feasibility study for investing in the Moatize coal mines in Mozambique. The agreement between the governments of Mozambique and the Vale Group, in addition to investing in coal mines, Vale Group is also investing in copper mines in the North Konkola, Zambia.
A mining expert has warned that Zambia will lose a lot of revenue when copper prices on the international market hit above the US $7,500 per metric tonne mark due to an anticipated copper shortage likely to occur between 2010 and 2012.
The global economic crisis has made improving the mining sector in Congo region is slow, even some mining companies to stop the exploration activities. The increase in metal prices pushed mining companies to reactivate exploration and production activities of mining. The government hopes Congo copper and cobalt sector can increase production. Recovery of copper and cobalt production is very dependent on large projects in development.
