South Africa Coal Price Jumps To Ten-Month High

Prices for coal shipped from South Africa’s Richards Bay, site of the continent’s biggest export facility for the fuel, rose to a ten-month high on Asian demand and orders before the year-end holidays.

Export prices increased 96 c, or 1,4 percent, to an average of $68,45 a metric ton in the week ended December 11, according to the McCloskey Group.

China’s Coal Prices Have Momentum To Rise On Recovering Demand

Boosted by rapidly recovering demand, coal prices in China saw an across-the-board rise in major producing areas, entrepot markets, and consumer markets, according to a research report released by CJIS Securities.

On November 23, the price of 5,500-kcal coal held at 660 yuan/metric ton (tonne) at Qinghuangdao Port, a major domestic port for coal distribution, up 65 yuan/tonne over the beginning of October. That day, coal prices at Guangzhou Port stood at 795 yuan/tonne, up 120 yuan/tonne.

Keaton Moves Ahead With R130m Vanggatfontein Coal Project

JSE-listed coal exploration and development company Keaton Energy reported on Wednesday that its board had authorised the development of the first phase of the Vanggatfontein project, previously known as the Delmas project.

The project was central to the company’s vision of producing two-million tons a year of saleable coal.

In its interim report for the six months ended September, Keaton said that, following two and a half years of exploration and regulatory effort, the company was granted a mining right for the project in June.
