Division of Oil, Gas and Mining Utah has given initial approval to Alton Cedar City to build a coal mine covering 635 hectares in the town of Alton Kane Country. This coal mine coal is expected to produce as many as 2 million tons.

Boosted by rapidly recovering demand, coal prices in China saw an across-the-board rise in major producing areas, entrepot markets, and consumer markets, according to a research report released by CJIS Securities.

On November 23, the price of 5,500-kcal coal held at 660 yuan/metric ton (tonne) at Qinghuangdao Port, a major domestic port for coal distribution, up 65 yuan/tonne over the beginning of October. That day, coal prices at Guangzhou Port stood at 795 yuan/tonne, up 120 yuan/tonne.

BHP Billiton is pushing to drive the pricing of coking coal, which is used to manufacture steel, away from annual negotiations and towards spot prices, mirroring its successful move with the annual negotiations on iron ore.

The request by the world’s largest supplier of coking coal comes as it starts the annual negotiations with customers in South Korea, Taiwan, India and Japan, including the country’s largest steelmaker, Nippon Steel Corporation.
