Mozambique Approved Environmental Impact Study To Build Coal-Fired Power Plant In Benga, Tete

Mozambique Government has approved the environmental impact study for the construction of coal-fired power plant in Benga region, Tete Province. Development of coal-fired power plant will be done by Riversdale mining company. Project coal-fired power plant using coal as Benga energy power plants. Development of coal-fired power plant carried out in two stages. The first phase operational in 2013 with an electric capacity of 500 megawatts produced. Then the second phase will generate electricity of 2,000 megawatts.

Feasibility study conducted by Riversdale mining company shows exploration in Benga coal mines can coal produce as many as 5.3 million tons of coal per year. Production of coal will last for 5 years (2009-2014). It is estimated that coal reserves in the area Benga 273.3 million tons, consisting of 181.3 million has been proven coal and coal 92 million still in research process.

Riversdale, an Australian mining company which has exploration concessions in the Benga coal mines for 25 years. Mozambique government hopes building coal-fired power plant and coal mine exploration in Benga, Tete Province can provide employment opportunities for people who are in coal mining areas and promote economic Benga province of Tete.
