Gold Fields Ltd.’s biggest mine, Driefontein in South Africa, is producing at half its normal rate following an earth tremor on Dec. 7, the Solidarity labor union said.

“The night shift is not back yet, so they’re on half production,” Reint Dykema, a spokesman for the labor union, said by mobile phone today.

The government ordered that the mine, 44 miles west of Johannesburg, be temporarily shut after two workers were killed in the earth tremor. Driefontein accounted for about 21 percent of Gold Fields’ production in the quarter ended Sept. 30, when it produced 189,500 ounces.

The National Union of Mineworkers will hold a day of mourning, possibly on Dec. 17, spokesman Deon Boqwana said by mobile phone today. Seven employees died at Driefontein, which has more than 15,000 workers, in the 12 months through June.

Gold Fields spokesman Julian Gwillim has been unable to comment on the situation at the mine since yesterday.
